An experimental editorial publication exploring the beauty and variety of traditional Russian clothing.
The brief challenged me to communicate the research through mostly imagery and as little text as possible, using layout, scale and visual relationships to let the garments speak for themselves. The book moves from head to toe, creating a visual journey through regional dress, its details and cultural context.

Exploring traditional Russian dress through a visual journey from head to toe. The book begins with the kokoshnik and ends with footwear, using photography, painting and archival imagery to explore how traditional garments were worn, represented and connected to their surroundings.

From matching sarafans with landscapes of the Russian countryside to zooming in on kosovorotkas hidden within classical paintings, each section takes a different approach to bringing attention to the details of traditional clothing.

Historical images of kokoshniks are paired with the actual headpieces, while the footwear section strips the imagery back and focuses on the natural placement of shoes on the ground.

The editorial system plays with scale, comparison and composition to make familiar historical imagery feel more immediate, while keeping the focus on the garments themselves.
